Learn healthy lawn tips provided by a horticulture specialists

TOWN OF TONAWANDA - Brian Eshenauer, horticulture specialist with the Erie County Cornell Cooperative Extension, will provide fundamental strategies that will result in a healthy lawn at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 17 in the community room of the Phillip Sheridan Building, 3200 Elmwood Ave., Town of Tonawanda.
The program will focus on no or low pesticide gardening options including organic lawn care. Residents are encouraged to bring questions and also are welcome to bring along a picture or sample of a lawn problem for discussion.
Eshenauer works closely with Cornell faculty, Extension Educators and growers to bring research based information and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) innovators to Ornamental Greenhouse, Nursery, Christmas tree and Sod producers. In addition to general diagnostics Eshenauer specialized in turfgrass and landscape plant education. He has worked closely with athletic field managers in schools, colleges and municipalities to reduce and eliminate their use of chemicals.
Information and literature will also be provided from local contractors who are available to perform organic lawn services for town residents.
This information and enlightening presentation is open to all and sponsored by the Town of Tonawanda Town Board, and the Town of Tonawanda Commission for Conservation of the Environment.
“Citizens have expressed a concern for the use of pesticides and chemicals for lawn and garden care throughout the town,” said Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana. “It is great that the Commission of the Environment is providing this educational opportunity to help our residents understand that there are organic and other gardening methods to help reduce these concerns.”
This event continues the 2012 annual Town Environmental Speakers Series sponsored by the Town Commission for Conservation of the Environment, designed to educate the community on current environmental issues that affect their lives. This year’s speaker series will continue in July with a Rain Garden Demonstration Event, scheduled to coincide with the annual Garden Tour.
