The atmosphere of the dark auditorium is soon to be filled with suspense, horror, and ‘murder’ at Tonawanda High School as the fall play, ‘I’m Getting Married in the Morning,’ by Lee Mueller, is performed by some of Tonawandas finest student actors.
Challenged by the improvisational skills needed to perform this play, students have risen to the challenge and been working diligently at rehearsals while under the direction of Andrea Flethcher, who led the Niagara-Wheatfield High School cast last season in its production of ‘CATS.’
Senior Fatimah Pennington, who plays the role of Mary Burger, an annoying and noisy gossip reporter, stated that her favorite aspect of this play is the audience participation.
Audience viewers will play their roles in the play, as ‘guests’ at a wedding reception. Presented with their invitations (tickets), audience members will aid in the investigation of the ‘murder, mystery’ premise of the play.
“This is definitely a challenging play. There are not many shows that have been performed like this at our school. The ‘improv’ is the hardest part, but while we are learning it - we are continuously improving,” said Pennington.
Senior Colin Reboy, as the Father of the Bride, stated that the versatility of the acting, which is necessary in the play - is what he values.
Reboy’s character, Harold Montaque, is a wealthy CEO of a large corporation who struggles with the frustration of his daughter getting married, ‘again,’ and he hopes this is the last one. However, he was described by Reboy, as a father who tends to cater to his daughter.
Co-star, Tori Brown, who plays opposite Reboy as Mildred Motague, the Mother of the Bride, described her character as dramatic, and ‘stuck up.’ Although this isn’t her favorite role in acting, she’s enjoyed the challenge of this play as well.
As the plot begins to thicken, Brenda Anne Marie, the bride, played by Erin Burris, finds her wedding to be a bit more eventful than she and her new groom, Edward Crock, played by Sean Felix, had anticipated.
While the story unfolds, the guests may find themselves involved in a soon to be determined murder mystery, and might even be viewed as ‘suspects.’
Producer Dan Lynch stated that the students are getting better by the day and really proving themselves as actors.
The cast would like to invite its guests to an evening of dinner and mystery at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday Nov. 19 at 600 Flethcher St., Tonawanda, in the High School Auditorium.
Admission for the show is $18, which includes show, dinner, and dessert. Tickets are currently on sale. To purchase, call 694-7670 ext. 2258, or E-mail dlynch@tona.wnyric.org to make reservations.
