Hilbert grad student Michael Reilly receives veteran’s scholarship

HAMBURG - The Hamburg Sunshine Rotary awarded its first ever annual Veteran’s Scholarship Award to Hilbert College MPA graduate student and Village of Hamburg resident Kevin Wright.

The $500 scholarship award was presented by Michael Reilly, president of the Hamburg Sunshine Rotary and and Hilbert adjunct professor, during their annual Veteran’s Recognition Dinner.

Wright is a veteran of the Iraqi war and is currently working on his master’s in public administration.

Besides his graduate studies, Wright has been working on a project at Hilbert to create an administrative and recruitment position for the veteran’s center at the college.

Currently, the center has a lounge and study area that provides veterans a place to go for some quiet studying time or to meet up with other fellow veterans on campus.

Wright said that although the center is great, he has seen a need for veterans returning to college for a central contact person whom they can go to for help as they transition back to civilian life.

“Vets need help with the transition of returning to college and their communities,” said Wright.

“Many returning veterans have stressed the benefits of having a point of contact that they can go to for guidance, as they had in the military, from individuals such as non-commissioned or staff non-commissioned officer.”
