Garden Gate Healthcare Facility salutes veteran

The McGuire Group’s Garden Gate Health Care Facility, Cheektowaga is pleased to recognize veteran Helen (Cooley) Jacob for her service during World War II. She was born on May 16, 1918 in Buffalo and served in the Army from Sept. 1, 1943 until Nov. 8, 1945. Helen worked as a Secretary in Paris and retired at the rank of Tech Sgt. 4.

She earned a number of medals including the American Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, WW II Bronze Service Star and WAAC Service Ribbon.

As a civilian, Helen worked as a secretary at a bank in New York and at the VA Hospital, where she later became a volunteer. She also has a wing at the VA Hospital named after her, the Helen G. Jacob Wellness Center. “It’s for all women veterans,” she stated. She is responsible for starting the Erie County Women’s Post 1586 and stated that her service “was one of the most wonderful times in my life.”

She is the wife of the late Bill Jacob and has two daughters and one son. She has been a resident at Garden Gate Health Care Facility since 2011. She enjoys helping others and reading the newspaper.
