Discover America Road Rally kicks off in Boston
The 48th annual Discover America Road Rally will begin at the Patchin Fire Company, located at 8333 Boston State Road, and will cover 105 miles of the Southtowns, specifically Erie, Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties.
Tom Krajewski, the organizer of the rally, said that this event gives motorists the opportunity to see fall foliage before the snow descends and to learn new things about the area.
This year’s participants will stop at cemeteries in the three counties. Information collected from tombstones will be used to answer questions at the trip’s conclusion.
“It just gives people a sense of where they are and to appreciate where they are,” Krajewski said. “And people say, time and again, that they like it a lot.”
The rally is similar to the television show “The Amazing Race” and some participants have even suggested that Krajewski and others create something similar to that idea.
“We’ve thought about it, but we haven’t come up with anything yet,” Krajewski said.
When riders finish the ride, they will roll their wheels to a stop at Holland Willows Restaurant in Holland. Krajewski said that he and his wife took a recent tour of the Southtowns area and were “impressed” with the leaves.
“We’re just hoping that they stick around until next weekend,” he said. “Maybe we should have had it this weekend.”
The rally attracts an average of 70 competing cars, each year. So far, this year, 36 individuals have signed up for the event. Krajewski said that he is encouraging people to sign up on or before Tuesday, Oct. 9, because the rally fee will increase on the day of the event.
Registration will at 9:30 a.m. and the first car will head out at noon. Pre-registration is available, although interested parties may sign up on the day of the event. Fees cover a roast beef dinner for two at the Holland Willows.
