Kenilworth assists Troops with food drive

KENMORE - Saturday, Nov. 17, the Kenilworth Fire Department, along with Boy Scout Troop #286 and Girl Scout Troops #782 and #30612, distributed fliers and bags, meant to fill with food donations, to every home in the Fire Department’s District.
“We use to just collect food and bring it to the churches in the area, but just within the department,” said Jim McGee, Kenilworth Firefighter. “Last year we decided to get the entire community involved in our district and we have been pretty successful.”
Wednesday, Dec. 5 is the collection night for these donations. If you are part of the Kenilworth Fire Department’s area and received a bag they are asking residents to put the bags outside their front door at 6 p.m. and they will be driving around, in the truck, to manually collect the food.
“There are roughly 3,700 houses in the district, so we figure even if we get a small percentage we are going to get a lot of food donated to the pantry,” said McGee.
This was the first year they decided to have the Boy Scout and Girl Scout Troops involved with the event. They met at the fire hall, mapped out the entire district, dropped off the children and covered the district. He said they felt it was a good idea to get them involved in the event and spend time doing community service.
“I think kids get this on the home front from their parents, it’s just another way to reinforce community service, and to get them involved with another aspect of their lives with the fire department,” said McGee.
He said when you volunteer for the fire department it’s out of concern for the district, and the goodness of your heart, and that maybe one day some of these children will grow up and want to be a part of that.
“We are doing this for people in the community that are in need, and we volunteer in the community because we care about it, and there are a lot of people in need so we want to make this annual,” said McGee.
