Richard F. Dash
Private funeral services were held for Richard F. Dash, 84, of Hamburg, who died on Saturday, March 9, 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Justine M. “Judy” (Leco) Dash; children, Marilyn (Kent) Jeffrey, Richard (Maura), Robert (Laura) and Diane Dash; siblings, Chester Dash and Evelyn Braymiller; grandchildren, Katherine, Caroline, Erik, Nicole, Ryan and Brett and nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dash grew up in Blasdell. He was a star athlete at Blasdell High School, playing basketball and more importantly, football.
In 1950 he married his lovely bride Judy. Fate brought them together over a shared love of hot fudge sundaes. They met at Biehler’s Tea Room in Hamburg, where he worked as a soda jerk.
Shortly after, he was sent overseas to fight in the Korean War, in which he earned a Purple Heart. Once back in the States, Dash resumed working at the Steel Plant, where he started at $.25 an hour when he was 16.
He had many interests. He liked books, movies, history, politics, travel, time with friends and family, puttering around in the barn, and riding around on his John Deere.
Always an avid athlete, Mr. Dash played tennis, volleyball, and golf. He enjoyed many a tennis match at Willow Bend and the Hamburg Tennis Club, and golf outings at Springville Country Club and Golfview in Fort Myers, Fla. In turn, his four children got many, many lessons in how to play each of these “the right way.”
One of the things he liked doing best was to make people laugh - and he did a lot of that. He was also generous, forgiving, empathetic, always willing to help family or friends, loved animals, enjoyed hard work, and was grateful for how many days he got to spend on this earth.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Buffalo, Inc.
Friends may call on Thursday, March 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Loomis, Offers and Loomis, Hamburg Chapel.
