Say thank you to those who fought for freedom

THE TONAWANDAS - Take a look around you on Sunday, Nov. 11 and see how many veterans you can spot while you are at the grocery store, out to dinner or at the mall.
I bet you won’t be able to spot too many of them.
That’s because these are the men and women who don’t ask to be praised for all the work they have accomplished. And they wouldn’t dare want you to feel bad for them if you knew the things they have lost and how much they had to sacrifice throughout their lives.
They blend in very well. They look very much like the rest of us and act like us, too.
However, these men and women - although they may not want us to say it - are different from the rest of us.
They are brave, they are bold and they are strong. They are the reason we stand here today able to face the world with confidence.
The reason we have the freedom to do what we please as American citizens.
They are the backbone of America.
They are members of the military.
They are veterans.
Take time and thank a veteran for risking their life for your freedom. Without them we wouldn’t have what we do today.
• There are many veterans who live in your neighborhoods who are looking for jobs, homes and sometimes just a simple conversation.
Each year we celebrate Veterans Day. To some this is just another day off. But to those who this holiday is intended to honor, it’s more.
Instead of just saying thank you this year. Stop by a VFW, DAV 120 or the American Legion and get to know your local veterans. Maybe enjoy a cup of coffee or take them out to eat to meet your family.
Who knows maybe they can teach us all a thing of two about being brave and bold.
Happy Veterans Day. Thank you for your services.
