Why do people commit these types of crimes

Maybe it is just that time a year again, but I feel the number of stupid crimes is once again on the rise.
Each week I read through many police reports and they all leave me wondering why people do what they do. But there are a few out there that are just so mind boggling it leaves me questioning why people are so stupid.
This past week a person was charged for allegedly attempting to break into a vehicle. Now, those kinds of crimes unfortunately happen all the time, but what made this one so unique is the person was trying to break in a car that was parked next door to the police station. Did they really think they were not going to get caught that close to a dozen or so police officers.
Another crime I just can not imagine being arrested for, going to jail, hiring a lawyer and appearing in front of a judge is petit larceny cases where the amount stolen is $1 or $2.
Two weeks ago a person was charged for taking a can of beer valued at $1.09. Another was charged for taking a marshmallow treat also valued at $1.09.
The final person took several sticks of beef jerky valued at a quarter a piece.
Though I do not know or understand the entire story and what prompted them to do this, it just seems like there is a lot to loose and very odd to go through that entire process for a can of beer or a snack.
