Local restaurants earn Best in Show at festival

It’s a wonderful sight to see all the festivals the Tonawandas have hosted over the years. From hosting its own New Year’s Eve Ball Drop to the Taste of Tonawandas and of course, Canal Fest.

There are so many events, it almost gives residents no reason to leave the city. With the growth in bars in the downtown area including a few fine dining restaurants and the view of the waterfront not too far from there, why would they leave?

However, as much as we all love a fine dining atmosphere for an evening away from the kids, credit is often overlooked when it comes to our everyday sub shops and on-the-go eateries.

The recently held, Taste of Tonawandas was once again successful this year. Welcoming residents to use their pallets as the judge to choose which local restaurant offers the best appetizer or entree.

This year’s winners include: T.C. Wheeler’s won Best Appetizer, for its Stuffed Peppers; Submasters won Best Side, for its Deep Fried Mac and Cheese; T.C. Wheeler’s won Best Pizza, for its Rueben; O’Connell’s American Bistro won Best Pork Entree, for its Pulled Pork Tacos; Knights of Columbus - Twin City Council No. 412 won Best Entree - Chowder and Best Dessert, for its Strawberry Waffles.

Out of 14 total participating restaurants, these select winners should be proud of their accomplishments.

This event really allows local restaurants to put their best foot forward and showcase their cooking and baking talents. It’s a way of reminding residents that their restaurant is still in the area and they should stop in an try a bite of the latest special.

It’s not surprising that T.C. Wheeler’s and Submasters were at the top of this list. Both establishments are constantly changing their menu to bring new, flavorful eats to the counter.

Although all participating restaurants have their own taste to bring to the table, people want new things when attending a festival - they want to be wowed. Maybe, this isn’t about what types of foods are offered... maybe it’s about winning a competition.

However, the residents are the true judges, so stop into one of these fine establishments and check it out for yourself.
