Mortons Corners Volunteer Fire Department holds installation and awards dinner
After the customary pledge of allegiance, the national anthem was sung by Becky Horning of New York Rockin’ Revue. Afterward, a short invocation was spoken, followed by dinner provided by Three Star Family Restaurant (located in North Collins). The line officers, executive officers and captains of 2011 were then sworn in.
The 2011 line officers are: Chief Frank Boice (member for 18 years); First Assistant Chief Mike Schneider (member for 40 years); Second Assistant Chief Scott Visnesky; Third Assistant Chief Jeff Story (member for 10 years).
The 2011 captains are: First Aid, Steve Bugary (one-year member) and Fire Police, Don Haley.
The executive officers for 2011 are: President Florence Schneider (member for 10 years); Vice President Matthew Schneider; Treasurer Brian Schneider (member for 28 years); Secretary Danielle Visnesky; Sergeant of Arms Kris Bacon (member for eight years); Legal Council Patrick Timmel (member for four years).
“There’s many ways in which we can do better to our communities … but, certainly, there’s nothing more noble, more time-consuming, or more important than the emergency services,” said Pastor Bob Bridge, after the swearing-in.
“I can’t think of anything else that anybody does in which you’re on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. And I can’t think of anything else where the sacrifices you must make,” Bridge said, “not only your own personal sacrifices, but the sacrifices your family makes; the dinners that are missed whether you’re training or out on fire calls. The different things I know you guys have to sacrifice to be part of the service and your training. So on behalf of the residents and the town of Concord, I’d like to thank every one of you for what you do.”
Erie County Legislator John Mills recognized and honored Keith M. Hares for his “service and commitment, even to the extent of risking his life for the people of his community.” On March 3, at approximately 3:25 p.m., Hares was put to the test during a working structural fire on Mortons Corners Road, in which he fell through the first floor and into the basement.
“Although injured, Keith was determined to continue and fight in the fire, only leaving for medical help by the insistence of the chief,“ explained Bridge. Hares’ colleagues jokingly presented him with a roll of toilet paper and adult-sized boxer-briefs with the Superman logo on them, presenting it as a “new way to fly.”
The board members and truck captains were also acknowledged.
The 2011 Board of Directors included Dave Brooks, Dawn Story, Haley, Dennis Fuller, Bacon and Bugary.
Included in the 2011 truck captains were: truck two: Jeff Singleton (member for three years); truck three: Darryle Brooks (member for 24 years); truck five: Fuller (member for 29 years); truck seven: Jim James (member for 24 years) and Co-Captain Patrick Timmel (member for four years).
Special recognition was given to Patrick Timmel, Matthew Schneider, Bugary and Jack Story.
The 2011 top responders were Jeff Singleton with 33 calls, Bugary with 36, Fuller with 41, Haley with 42 and Dave Brooks with a grand total of 57.
The Mortons Corners Volunteer Fire Company attended 69 calls in 2010, 35 of which were for assistance with fires, nine standbys and eight community parades.
