Julianna Kraft
Julianna Kraft, a seventh grader at Springville-Griffith Institute’s Middle School, won first place for her poetry in the Western New York Federation of Women’s Clubs Creative Writing Contest.Julianna was awarded $25 and a certificate for her original poetry. “I entered several pieces of work from several different students, but Julianna’s poem is the only one to win an award,” said her teacher, Denise Broffman.
Julianna’s poem, “Autumn Forests,” is below in its entirety.
Shimmer, shimmer shines the sun
Filtering through the leaves
Giving light the forest floor
And the mossy sheaves
Trickle, trickle runs the brook
In gaiety it sings
Rushing over pebbles smooth
The bubbling, burbling spring
Bounding, bounding run the deer
As if acting out a dance
Watching all with liquid eyes
Royalty in their stance
Chirping, chirping sing the birds
A new song every day
But now they’re flying further south
As winter’s on its way
Beauty, beauty such a word
To describe these woods I see
Gilded in the autumn mist
No place I’d rather be.
