Collins Winter Recreation is under way

The Town of Collins Winter Recreation program opened its doors on Friday, Nov. 2 to begin another five-month program for children ages 5-19. Days of operation include: Tuesdays 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. (ages 5-15), Fridays 6 to 8:30 p.m. (ages 5-15) and Saturday afternoon noon to 4 p.m. (ages 5-12) and Saturday night 6 to 10 p.m. (ages 13-19).

It is important to note that parents are requested not to drop their children off at the Youth Center prior to 15 minutes before the start of the shift as the doors will not be open. For example on Tuesday Nights, doors open at 5:15 p.m. and sign in will begin at 5:30.

The winter program is made available for residents of the Town of Collins at no cost; as a guest of the program they not only need to attend with a resident, but are required to pay a small fee as well.

On Friday, over 50 kids were in attendance to enjoy all Winter Rec has to offer, from the Game Room to the Lounge and the Gym to the Craft Room, there is something for everyone who attends.

On Saturday afternoon (noon to 4 p.m.) 40 of the 5-12-year-old group took part in roller skating, hockey and other gym activities such as soccer, dodge ball, tag games and more. The Craft Room was again a popular station for the kids as they were given the opportunity to build holiday-themed crafts as well as beaded necklaces and also enter the Thanksgiving Coloring Contest. Finally, Saturday Night (6 to 10 p.m.) was equally as popular as 40 kids again packed the Youth Center to play basketball, hockey and dodgeball in the gym, and also to try out the center’s new Ping Pong table, located in the Lounge. As always, the game is very popular as well with all the games made available for them to play, such as pool, foosball, air hockey and basketball.

Families may register their kids at any time on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays or visit the Web site at townofcollins.com.

The first field trip of the season will be to Fredonia State College on Saturday, Nov. 24 for a night of ice skating from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Permission slips can be obtained at the Youth Center during hours of operation or online. Other trips currently being discussed are bowling, movies and tubing at Kissing Bridge.
