After watching the varsity team struggle the night before in their opener, the Gowanda JV Football Team made the 70-mile trek north to Wilson on Sept. 1 looking for revenge. They were successful and evened the score with the Lakemen with a convincing 39-0 whitewashing. The Panthers took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards to paydirt. Fullback Lucas McKeever bulled over from the one-yard line with Seth Halftown running for the two-point conversion.
In the second quarter, Chris Hammond broke through and blocked a Wilson punt that set up Gowanda's second score. After a 30-yard pass completion from Jordan Young to Hammond, Halftown made a nifty 19-yard run for the Blue and White's second tally. Halftown also ran for the two-point conversion, making the score 16-0.
Gowanda added a third touchdown before the half as Dillon Blackman hauled in a nine-yard pass from Young. Halftown converted for the third time and the Panthers led 24-0 at the half.
In the second half, Gowanda's dominating defense, led by Lucas Brawdy, Alex Emery, Shawn Myers, Casey Bley and Devon Clark, forced a turnover as Young intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards. That set up quarterback Carter Benton for a one-yard touchdown run. McKeever ran for the conversion. Gowanda's final score came late in the contest as Myers plowed into the endzone from a yard out. Brawdy kicked a successful PAT and the Panthers coasted to a 39-0 win.
Gowanda coaches Rick Weber and Ed VonIderstein were able to utilize all of their players throughout the game.
The Panthers will now prepare for their home opener against Cleveland Hill. The game will be played on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Hillis Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
