Webster’s goal gives Mt. Mercy a 1-0 win over Depew

DEPEW - If the Mt. Mercy Academy soccer team continues to get an effort like this they will make a lot of noise in the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association.

Sophomore midfielder Erin Webster scored from 25 yards out and Mt. Mercy missed several other golden opportunities as the Magic defeated Depew High School, 1-0, in a non-league contest on Monday.

The win moves the Magic to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the MMAA.

“We created a lot of opportunities, that was the good thing,” stated Mt. Mercy coach John Glose. “The bad thing is we didn’t finish a lot of them. And that’s what we will continue to work on.”

The Magic dominated play from the outset; but had a hard time finishing inside 25 yards. Numerous shots either went off the post and crossbar or just went wide. They had two or three great opportunities from corner kicks that just skipped wide of the far post.

“We do a really good job until we get to the final third,” Glose said. “We need to finish and tighten up there.”

The good news after the game for the Magic, besides their win, was they left the field healthy. After a rash of injuries decimated the starting 11, the Magic are starting to get back to full strength. And just in the knick of time, as they have two important conference games this week.

The Magic will look to move to 2-0 in league play as they travel to Mt. St. Mary Acadmey to take on the Thunder today at 4:30 p.m.

With only four teams making the playoffs, a win here would give the Magic a huge boost heading into the rest of league play.

“Everything we have done in the preseason and the non-league games is to get ready for the league season,” explained Glose. “This game (today) is the biggest game of the year so far. We have to be at our best. And we have to play our best to win.”
