The Gowanda Merchants Baseball Team split two games over the weekend in the Men's Senior Baseball League.
On Friday, June 29, they walloped the Giants in Dunkirk in by a score of 22-3. Two days later at Panther Park, the Silver Creek Braves handed the Merchants their first loss of the season in a 1-0 pitcher's duel.
Against the Giants, the locals pounded out 26 hits. Six different Merchant players collected three hits apiece. Included on the list of three hits were: Shane Swan, Jeff Johnson, Lance Thurston, Justin Fish, Zack Colvin and Peter Mangels.
Defensively, Brent Thompson started on the mound but left before the second inning after being hit by a pitch while batting. Mangels came on in relief and pitched the next four innings. Jeff Johnson pitched the sixth followed by Mike Hutchinson in the seventh. The 60-year-old Hutchinson is the oldest player to ever appear in a game for the Merchant organization. He allowed just one run in his one inning of work on the hill.
It was a different story for both teams offensively on Sunday, July 1 as the Silver Creek Braves handed the Merchants their first loss of the season. The Braves' Bob Edwards and Gowanda's Rick Johnson each pitched a complete game and also struck out nine opposing batters. However, the Braves managed to score the game's only run to pull out a 1-0 victory.
With the loss, the Merchants' record falls to 6-1 on the season. After a mid-season break, Gowanda returns to action on Sunday, July 15 at Panther Park. They will take on the Yankees beginning at 11 a.m.
