Springville hosts softball tournament
As the home team, Springville fielded a team of its own and advanced to the semifinal in district 1 against Grand Island on Sunday, July 1. However, the host lost that playoff game by a 7 – 5 score. Grand Island went onto to lose to North Tonawanda the following day.
The following Saturday, June 23, Springville avenged that loss with a lopsided 19 – 5 victory to even its record at 1 – 1. The next day, the local boys were right back on the field, this time against Southline. Springville secured its second win in as many days by defeating Southline 7 – 4 to finish 2 – 1 going into the semifinal.
“All the boys played well in the tough games,” said Brent Raiber, assistant coach of the Springville squad. He pointed out a few of the team’s key contributors throughout the tournament, including Austin Lux, who pitched in three games, and Nick Pfarner, who hit a home run.
“Liam Raiber contributed on offense and defense as catcher,” Brent Raiber continued. “Rhett Bunch contributed great hitting and pitching. Andrew Walker contributed with good hitting.”
Joel Lux is the coach of the team, with Darren Wells and Raiber as Lux’s assistants.
Vincent Roberts is the director of the 9 and 10 Tournament.
