The varsity boys' and girls' bowling teams at Gowanda Central School each placed second in their respective conferences this season.
Both teams were just one game away from at least sharing the championship. The boys just missed their third title in three years. Each team will now prepare for the County Roll-offs.
At the Cattaraugus-Little Valley Wrestling Tournament on Jan. 21, Gowanda brought home a third-place trophy. Eleven schools were entered in the one-day event.
The Panthers had five second-place finishers who included: Jon Flynn (106), Jason Riley (120), Lucas McKeever (126), Ryan Dils (152) and Ryan Richter (160). Christian Francis was third at 171 while Derek Miller took fourth at 138. Next up for the grapplers will be the CCAA meet followed by the Section VI event.
In boys basketball, Southwestern outscored Gowanda in each of the four quarters en route to a 60-43 win at Lakewood on Jan. 20. Nick Huffman led all Gowanda scorers.
The loss dropped the cagers' record to 2-11 overall and 0-7 in league play. The varsity will play Dunkirk at Silver Creek at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
The boys' JV team played well for three quarters but the Trojans pulled away in the final stanza by connecting on numerous foul shots. The 3-10 Panthers were led in scoring by Isaiah Utley.
Ed Howard was the first local bowler to roll a perfect game this season at K&L Lanes on Jan. 18. Howard has bowled at K& L for many years and also has a high game of 299 to his credit.
The Gowanda Recreation "Learn to Ski" program is off to a good start. Excellent conditions at Holiday Valley will provide many local youths an opportunity to ski and snowboard through the month of March. The annual hot dog roast and pizza party is also coming up in the next few weeks. Questions regarding the ski program should be directed to Daren North at 863-6113.
Inconsistent weather conditions have wreaked havoc with the ice conditions at St. John Park this winter. On two separate occasions, the rink was just a day away from opening only to have temperatures climb well into the 40s. The chances for ice skating this season look bleak but a stretch of consistent cold weather could allow for a shortened season in February.
Skylar Ondus, Taylor Nielson, Alex Sternisha, Mike Updegrave, Ricky Johnson and Valley Pharmacy and Medical Supplies will each receive an award at the 15th Annual Gowanda Area Sports Banquet at the Slovenian Club on Feb. 4. Call Mark Benton at 532-4053 or e-mail hidibenton@aol.com to reserve tickets. The deadline is Jan. 28.
