Gowanda Sports Report for Aug. 19
Marlow represents the Girls Scouts of Western New York. She enhanced the arts and crafts program by providing several creative activities for the children under the pavilion at St.John Park. The following day, a combination of 75 counselors, parents and children attended Fantasy Island.
It has been a very good year for the summer recreation program in Gowanda. After being classified a Day Camp for the first time in history, the program received high grades during their evaluation by Cattaraugus County on Aug. 7.
The circus is coming to town. The Walker International Circus will be on the grounds of the Gowanda VFW Field Saturday, Aug. 18. There will be two shows that begin at 3 and 5:30 p.m. Discounted tickets can be picked up at several stores throughout the area. The Gowanda location was a last-minute substitute for the traveling show under the "Big Top."
Gowanda will again field four football teams at the youth level this fall. The age groups are 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13. Each team is called the Panthers and they wear the high school colors of Blue and White. This will be Gowanda's second season participating in the OATKA conference.
Varsity and JV volleyball pre-season practice at Gowanda Central School will begin on Monday, Aug. 20. The Panthers will rely on seniors Jennifer Stebbins, Alexa Farner and CJ Sawatis to continue their winning ways. Last year, Gowanda won the CCAA Division I title but lost to Falconer in the Section VI playoffs.
Gowanda and Cattaraugus-Little Valley will scrimmage against each other in football on Saturday, Aug. 25. The scrimmage will take place in the morning on the Timberwolves' turf field. Both the varsity and JV teams will have their final tuneup before their season opener on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, respectively.
