Springville JV volleyball finishes season with a loss

SPRINGVILLE — Having already wrapped up the division title, the Springville-Griffith Institute junior varsity girls volleyball team’s ranking in the league standings was already guaranteed, when it hosted Olean on Oct. 23.

For the third time this season, the girls lost the contest, falling in all three matches, for a 3 – 0 defeat. The girls’ record fell to 16 – 3, but that mark was still good enough to hold them at No. 1 in the league and included a 10 – 2 league record.

Coach Robert Gainey called it “an amazing season,” even after the sweep loss. “The accomplishments achieved during the season were incredible,” he said, after the final game. Gainey was referring to the team’s overall record and, also, to the extended winning streaks the season featured.

“At one point during the season, the team won 10 matches in a row, including 24 straight game victories, during that stretch,” he said. “The sophomore class from this team achieved 32 match wins over their careers and two league championships.

“I would like to thank all the girls for their tremendous amount of commitment and dedication shown throughout the season. Great job, ladies!”
