Monday July 30, 2012 | By:Mark Benton | Sports
Gowanda Recreation has over 135 children registered for their six-week summer program. The most popular activities are swimming, arts and crafts, dodgeball, softball, kickball, nok-hockey and the spray pool. Volleyball and badminton have also returned to the playground located at St. John Park. Upcoming field trips to Evangola State Park, Fantasy Island and Coca-Cola Field to see the Buffalo Bisons play will take place in August. The program concludes on Friday, Aug. 17 with a talent show and awards ceremony.
The All-Western New York Lacrosse team roster was recently released. Former GCS player Brandon Brooks, now at Silver Creek, was selected to the first team. As far as league all-stars, Gowanda's Nolan Lay and Seth Halftown made the second team in Class C. Brody Jimerson and Ryan Richter received honorable mention.
Nick Crassi Jr. continues to battle in his #7 race car in the Late Model Division at Holland International Speedway this summer. He remains in third place, 22 points behind the leader, Eldon King.
Playoffs begin July 23 for the Gernatt Babe Ruth Baseball team. If they can reach the finals, they will play in Diethrick Park, home of the Jamestown Jammers on July 30.
The official start to high school sports is just two weeks away. Gowanda Central School offers football, co-ed cross-country, girls' tennis and girls' volleyball in the fall. The football program will be looking to rebound from a 2-7 record last season while the volleyball team hopes to defend their CCIAC Division I crown. The tennis team has a new coach. Both cross-country teams should be very competitive and exciting to watch.
A co-ed fall soccer program will be offered to children ages 5-12 on Monday nights beginning Sept. 10. The five-week session will include a registration gift, refreshments, instruction and scrimmage games. There is a cost per child. More information will be sent home during the first week of school.
