Gowanda Sports Report for Sept. 9

Gowanda-area resident Nate Davis recently tried out and was selected to play for the Reding Rockets, members of a professional lacrosse league. He will report this week to begin preparations for his team's first game on Sept. 14 in New Jersey.

Davis, a GCS graduate, will play defense for the Rockets.

Although the scoreboard showed the Gowanda Varsity Football Team on the losing side in the team's opener on Aug. 31, the playing surface at Hillis Field received high marks. The GCS maintenance staff watered the field over the long, dry summer and the turf was in beautiful condition. It may still be one of the best natural grass surfaces for football in Western New York.

Jason Beckman, a 1991 GCS graduate, is the new head football coach at Amherst Central School. His team defeated Lackawanna at home on Aug. 31. Beckman had previous head coaching experience at Tonawanda High School.

Beckman's classmate, Mark Heichberger, stepped down this fall after coaching football at Springville-Griffith Institute for over a decade. He will, however, continue to guide the Griffins girls' tack team in the spring. Heichberger was recently in town to compete in the 16th Annual Gowanda Slow Pitch Softball Tournament.

Although three of the four Gowanda youth football league teams have been in action over the past two weeks, the varsity has yet to play a game. Lack of players from Elma and West Seneca West have kept the Panthers idle.

Lyle "Sarge" Boss was recently back in the Gowanda area for a family reunion. The 1963 GCS graduate was a three-time Section VI wrestling champion. A profile on his career will appear in an upcoming issue of the Gowanda News.
