Jamestown Mets top Gowanda Merchants in baseball

The Jamestown Mets took advantage of a few mental mistakes made by the Gowanda Merchants' defense and posted a 7-2 win in Senior Mens' Baseball League (MSBL) action on July 22. The game was played before a good crowd at Strider Field in Jamestown.
After three consecutive postponements due to inclement weather, the Merchants went back to work to secure their first-place spot in the standings. However, Jamestown received a solid pitching performance from former Merchant Jay Gran, who tossed a complete game to record the win. The Frewsburg High School baseball coach also helped his own cause by belting a three-run homer.
Ryan Sweda started on the mound for Gowanda and pitched well, considering it was his first time on the hill in over a year, but his defense was erratic and the offense almost non-existent in this contest to overcome the seven runs put up by the home team.
Lance Thurston and Peter Mangels did manage two hits apiece for Gowanda. One of Mangel's hits platted both Merchant scores. Gowanda was also victimized by leaving nine men on base.
With the loss, the Merchants' overall season record drops to 7-2. They return home on Friday, July 27, to face the Dunkirk A's. The first pitch at Panther Field is scheduled for 6 p.m.
