Springville-GI Griffins varsity football lose in triple overtime

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville varsity football team fell to a 0 – 2 record with a 19 – 13 triple overtime loss to the hands of the Eden Raiders at Pop Warner Field on Friday night, Sept. 7.

The Griffins were looking for their first win of the 2012 season.

Head Coach John Sopko said that, while his players did their best, he knows the team has room for improvement. “A game such as that leaves you feeling incomplete, because we did not finish the job at hand,” he said.

Springville fell behind early 7 – 0 and the score remained the same, heading into the second half.

The Griffins took the opening drive of the half 68 yards and tied the game up at 7 – 7, with a 1-yard Talon Berry touchdown run on fourth and goal.

Sopko said he knew the opening drive would be critical. “The first series following the half is typically important to set a tone,” he said.

After a fumble recovery by Dave DeLuca, the Griffins drove down to take the lead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Bill Dickinson to Tyler Conklin. DeLuca credited his teammates and “a little bit of luck” for the recovery. “It was just one of those plays where you’re in the right place at the right time,” he said. “[There was] great penetration by our defensive line. They were rock solid all night.”

Eden returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winning touchdown in the third overtime.

Although Sopko said the game was a tough loss to take, he said his players’ focus now shifts to the next game. “Once the scoreboard goes off, we focus forward, to put the previous game behind us,” he said. “We were right back to work Saturday morning, working in the high school pool on our conditioning.”

The Griffs will play at Burgard on Saturday, Sept. 15. The kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
