West Valley girls win SYI varsity championship

Chelsea Dashnaw
The West Valley varsity girl’s softball team competed against the Collins Center team on July 12 and defeated its opposition to win the Springville Youth Inc. varsity championship.

West Valley started the game in the lead 2 – 1. Soon after, however, Collins Center took a 5 – 2 lead, but in spite of the deficit, West Valley Head Coach Tim Dashnaw said his team began to “whittle away” at Collins Center’s lead.

In the top of the seventh, West Valley scored 5 runs to make the score 9 – 5, the final score of the game.

Ashley Blackmon had three hits and Alyssa Cizdziel had a triple. Dashnaw said team member Anna Ciesla had a good game pitching and Kristen Biella played a “strong game at first, catching a couple line drives.”

The coach said that, for him, one notable play occurred when the ball passed West Valley catcher Kaitlyn Snayczuk’s mitt and went toward the backstop. With a Collins Center player’s seizing the opportunity to make it to home, Snayczuk ran to the backstop and flicked the ball behind her without looking. The ball landed straight into West Valley pitcher Ciesla’s mitt, and she tagged the Collins Center girl out at home.

West Valley defeated the Boston One team to advance to the championship. Last year, Collins Center won the SYI girls varsity championship. The West Valley team is sponsored by House of Steele and the Collins Center team is sponsored by Creekside Physical Therapy.
