Would Mount Mercy get on board? Would the community get behind us?
Those were questions that needed answers.
This past Wednesday, the South Buffalo community, Mount Mercy Academy and Buffalo Seminary weren’t just on board, they went above and beyond.
The first Mercy’s Heroes basketball game, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project, was a great success.
The success and accolades must go to those who deserve them most – the players, the community and the coaches.
When Glose brought the idea to his parents they immediately jumped on board. They asked him what they needed to do to help. The parents are what drive the ship, and the Mount Mercy parents came up big time.
Buff Sem came out in special camouflage warm-ups for the night. They were honored that their children and school were asked to be a part of this event.
The community also got involved in a big way. The final numbers aren’t complete, but as of press time, the game raised more than $1,300. That couldn’t be done without the support of the South Buffalo and Buffalo Seminary community. Even with the weather being somewhat cold, and if you live in the Southtowns snowy, the community packed the house at Mount Mercy Academy.
They all came for one reason, to support the young women from both schools who wanted to be a part of this night in the worse way.
And that leaves us to the students athletes.
What can you say about these young women from Mount Mercy and Buffalo Seminary?
The young women who put on those jerseys knew the attention around this game was going to be big. It was going to be a bigger crowd then normal – and something that they might have never seen before.
All the pageantry that went with this game – from the Color Guard from Maritime Charter School, to the rifle presentation by the same school, had that big game feel.
Mount Mercy went on to win the game, and they improved to 9-6 and 3-4 overall. But, both schools won on this night.
They both showed why things are going to be right in this world.
With young women like the ones at Mount Mercy and Buffalo Seminary then everything will be ok for years to come.
