The Cleveland Hill Varsity Football Team ran through, around and over the Gowanda Panthers on their way to a one-sided victory. When the smoke finally settled, the Panthers found themselves on the wrong end of a 50-0 thumping.
The game was played in Cheektowaga on Sept. 8.
The Golden Eagles scored on their first possession of the game and took an early 8-0 lead. When Gowanda failed to move the ball on their first possession, the home team reached paydirt once again and raced out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter.
Gowanda's offense was again stiffled and the number-five ranked small school in Western New York scored once more to increase the margin at 20-0. But the Panthers finally came to life and put together a long, sustained drive just before the half, mostly on runs by Brennan Geiger. The visitors had marched the ball to the Eagles' 20-yard line and were threatening to score their first touchdown of the season. However, two pass attempts into the endzone fell incomplete and the scored remained 20-0 at intermission.
Cleveland Hill came out in the third period and blitzed the Panthers for another 22 points. Their overall team speed was too much for the Blue and White to overcome. Gowanda did not help their cause as they offense again had a hard time sustainong drives.
The score remained 42-0 late in the final period, when Gowanda punted the ball away on a fourth-and-three situation. Cleveland Hill tacked on the final score and conversion with 1:51 to play.
The 0-2 Panthers will have to regroup as they have another tough opponent with Eden coming to town this Friday night at Hillis Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
