Springville-GI golf team defeats Pioneer

Will Lawton
SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity golf team defeated Pioneer Central School on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Springville Country Club by a score of 327 – 337.

According to Coach David Hawkes, the Griffins turned in a great performance, overall. The team was led by medalist Will Lawton, who shot a 38.

The other top scores of the day were shot by Erik Hopkins and Greg Beatty, who both shot a 41. Hawkes said the win versus Pioneer was “huge,” given the circumstances. “It was a big win over our rival Pioneer during homecoming week and it was at our home course which is the Springville Country Club,” he said.

With their scores against Pioneer, Lawton, Hopkins and Beatty all qualified for the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Championship tournament. The qualifications for this tournament are based on players’ season averages. Acknowledging the tournament’s importance, Hawkes said, “This is a big deal. It’s been a long time since Springville has had three go to the championships.”

The S-GI golf team will wrap up its regular season on Tuesday, Oct. 2, with a home match against Lake Shore, at the Springville Country Club.
