Friday November 23, 2012 | By:Mark Benton | Sports
After dropping down to Division II last year and subsequently winning the conference championship, the Gowanda Panthers Varsity Wrestling program will square off against Division I foes this year.
According to Head Coach Mark Leous, several of the smaller schools have combined with larger schools and therefore only two conferences are needed this season.
Gowanda traveled to Fredonia on Friday, Nov. 16 for a scrimmage against the perennial Division I powerhouse Hillbillies. The team's first meet is against Olean at home on Nov. 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m.
St. Joseph School graduates Erin and Sara Kwiatkowski are playing high school basketball this winter at Springville-Griffith Institute. Erin is a junior on the varsity team while Sara plays for the Griffins' JV team. Both girls played basketball while attending St. Joe's.
From 1961 through 1970, the Gowanda boys' varsity basketball team played in the Springville Holiday tournament. From 1971 through 1975, the Panthers were part of the Salamanca HolidayTournament. For the past five years, including the upcoming season, Gowanda will play in both tournaments although the Salamanca tourney is held the second weekend in December.
Tom Sharrow, a 1963 Gowanda High School graduate recently returned to his hometown to share some stories and provide news clippings from the 1962 varsity football season that ended with the Panthers in a tie with Falconer for the Southwestern Conference championship. The Falcons upset the Panthers in Falconer 13-12 that season as the game ended on a controversial call at the goal line that denied the visitors a winning touchdown.
Gowanda went on to post an overall record of 7-1, just two points away from their first 8-0 season in school history. A miniature silver football that Sharrow received from then-Buffalo Bills quarterback Jack Kemp for being selected to the conference all-star team will be donated to the Gowanda Area Historical Society.
Gowanda Recreation will hold co-ed basketball registrations and practice sessions from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Dec. 10 and 11 in the lower gymnasium of the Academy Place for students in grades 4-6. There is a cost for the eight-week program. Call Mark Benton at 532-4053 for more information.
