WEST VALLEY — After opening the season with wins at Tapestry Charter School and at home versus Ripley, the West Valley Central School junior varsity girls volleyball team dropped a close game on Sept. 11 against Clymer.
Despite 8 points in three games, including 3 aces, by West Valley’s Madison Czapla, Clymer prevailed 2–1. That game handed West Valley its first loss of the season and decreased its road record to 1–1.
Two days later, the girls hosted Ellicottville in the teams’ first meeting of the season. West Valley took all three games to win the match 3–0.
MacKenzie and Madison Czapla led with 11 and 15 points. The girls improved to 3–1 on the season.
April Preston, head coach of the JV volleyball team and the athletic director of WVCS, said she would rather her girls focus on improvement and teamwork than get sidetracked by statistics.
“I don’t keep very many stats at the JV level,” she said, as her team prepared for a match in Sherman on Sept. 18. “I don’t want the girls to focus on that too much, but rather their development.”
After the game against Sherman, the girls geared up for back-to-back competitions on the weekend, starting with a home game against North Collins on Friday, Sept. 21, followed by the Olean Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 22. The JV team ‘s next match-up will be against Brocton on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
