Strong play has Morgan’s confidence on the rise at Canisius College

LANCASTER - At Lancaster High School, Lindsey Morgan was one of the greatest girls’ lacrosse players the school has ever seen. She tied or broke nearly every record at the school.

Her play helped her get noticed, and eventually recruited, by Canisius College.

While she was the go to player in high school, Morgan had to find her role the first couple of years with the Griffs.

An older team when she came in as a freshman, Morgan was just happy to get some playing time – even if it meant she wasn’t the big fish in a little pond like in high school.

“It was definitely a big change to go from a little school in Western New York to be playing with big players from all over the country,” stated Morgan. “It has definitely been a learning experience. I’m learning from everyone on the team and coach has been helping me a lot to improve my game all over.”

This season, Morgan has turned into the go-to player Canisius was hoping they would get after recruiting her three years ago.

The junior has flourished in a new role and, going into the Cornell and Ohio State game, already had 12 goals and 15 points. To put it into perspective, Morgan all of last season had 15 goals and 22 points.

“I am definitely more confident and I feel more part of the team,” Morgan said after their heart-breaking 10-8 loss to seventh-ranked Vanderbilt of the SEC. “Our big scorers graduated and I am just trying to fill the gap now.”

Confidence has played a big factor in Morgan’s breakout season. Always looking to score while in high school, Morgan now is looking to get, and more importantly, want the ball when it comes down to crunch time.

In their loss to Vandy, Morgan made a nice move and took a great pass from senior Megan Oosting to score the goal to give the Griffs an 8-6 lead – before the Commodores rattled off four-straight to claim the victory.

The last couple of seasons, Morgan might not have had the confidence to go hard to the goal against a team from the SEC.

This season, however, you can see the confidence growing through the first five games of the year.

“Confidence is building, it’s not up there all the way just yet,” she said. “But, it’s definitely getting there.”

Confidence breads success and Morgan hopes her game climbs to the next level as she and her teammates try to get back to the NCAA Tournament – a feat they accomplished last year.

For them to get back to the big dance, however, Morgan knows this team needs to do the little things right to win.

“We have to be a lot more consistent and have good games all around,” said Morgan. “We just have to do the job to come up with another MAAC championship again hopefully.”

Lindsey Morgan shows you don’t have to go to Vanderbilt or a Northwestern to have success. She has steadily become better since her freshman season and she is one of the reasons why people are starting to take notice of Canisius College lacrosse.

With Morgan and Oosting leading the way, there should be no reason why the Griffs to get back to the NCAA tournament – and even pull an upset.
