Springville varsity doubles up against Amherst

After two games had to be rescheduled, the varsity baseball team from Springville-Griffith Institute hosted Amherst on Monday, April 30. The Griffins were gunning for their fifth win in six outings but would have to knock off the club that set them back with an 8-4 defeat back on April 5, in Amherst.

Amherst began a comeback in the top of the fourth, scoring 2 runs to cut the deficit to 1. Springville failed to counter that inning, but managed to shut out the opposition in the top of the fifth.

In the fifth inning, three more runners came home to increase the home team’s lead to 6-2. Amherst responded with 1 run in the seventh, allowing the Griffins to walk away with a 6-3 victory. The win pulled Springville’s record to 6-6.

Drew Scharra was the winning pitcher, with no earned runs. He also came up with three hits, two of which were singles, and 2 runs. Matt Wolcott also produced for Springville with a double and 2 RBIs. Kyle Crotty had 2 RBIs and 2 singles.

The win counted as a league victory, the team’s second straight. After losing their first three league games, Springville is now 2-3 in league play.

The team rescheduled two games, one that was at home at the Concord Community Park against Maryvale on Tuesday, May 8 and one that will be at Depew on Saturday, May 12. The second game will take place at noon.

The Griffins played back-to-back nights later in the week, including a road game against East Aurora on Wednesday, May 2 and a home contest versus Pioneer on May 3.

The Griffins won the game against Cheektowaga 11-6 on the road on April 18.
