SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute varsity girls soccer team improved its record to 4 – 1, with a pair of shutout victories, last week. On Sept. 10, the Lady Griffs took on the Maryvale Flyers and came away with a 7 – 0 win.
Tia and Alena Woodarek led the way, combining for 5 goals and two assists. Dakota Nesselbush chipped in with 2 goals and an assist. Goalkeepers Katie Zeilen-Ersing and Tara Felser combined for the shutout in net.
Coach Eric Holler said that he was very pleased by his team’s performance. “Great overall team effort,” he said. “Our defense was exceptional and the girls buried our opportunities when they had them.”
The Lady Griffs continued their winning ways when they traveled to Cheektowaga on Sept. 13. For the second consecutive game, Springville shut out its opponent en route to an 8 – 0 win.
Courtney Schiele got the scoring started with a goal, with 1:31 left in the first half. Holler said that he believed it was that goal that jump-started his team. “It was a goal earned off hard work and may not have been the prettiest [but], essentially, it got us rolling for the second half,” he said.
During the second half, Springville pulled away with the Woodarek sisters’ and Nesselbush’s leading the way, offensively. Alena Woodarek tallied 3 goals and three assists, while her sister Tia added 2 goals and an assist.
Holler called his team’s defense “stellar. Our defense was stout again and contributed to Katie Zeilen-Ersing’s second, straight shutout,” he said.
