Gowanda Sports Report April 22, 2012

The CCAA Division I basketball all-star team had two Gowanda players on the first and second teams.

Junior Alexa Farner was a first team selection for the girls while Senior Nick Huffman was placed on the second team for the boys. Both players were top scorers and rebounders this past season on their respective teams.

Farner also plays volleyball and softball. She was an integral member on Gowanda's championship volleyball team last fall.

Huffman played split end and safety on the school's football team and participates in baseball for the Panthers in the spring.

With the cancellation of the Springville-Gowanda varsity baseball game due to rain that was to take place at Panther Field on April 11, both teams met at Community Park in Springville the following day. The Panthers dropped both games. The Griffins took the first contest by a score of 4-3 that went eight innings. In the nightcap, Gowanda was the designated home team but lost 5-4 in nine innings. Springville's sweep of Gowanda dropped the Panthers to 2-3 on the season. The Blue and White return home on Wednesday, April 25 and take on Falconer. The first pitch will be thrown at 4:30 pm.

Little League Baseball will begin their 53rd consecutive season during the fourth week of April. There are five teams in the Majors this year. The official opening day festivities will take place a few days later on April 28.

The Gowanda Recreation Department is in the process of renovating the main basketball court at St. John Park. Lines to designate the outer boundaries, half court and free throw area were recently painted. New nets and a fresh coat of paint for the backboards is next. An additional portable basket was added last week.

The Gowanda Merchants Baseball Team is looking to secure their fifth consecutive title in the Mens Senior Baseball League. New players with high school and/or college baseball experience are welcomed to tryout. Call team manager Dave Robbins at 532-2797 for more information.

The GCS varsity lacrosse team lost their opener at Lewiston-Porter last week. The Panther stickmen under the direction of coach Ray Logan will host Eden on Monday, April 23. The face off is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Hillis Field.
