On the opening night of the 2012-13 bowling season at K&L Lanes, Mike Krzemien rolled a three-game set of 849 in the Frank Galfo Memorial Monday Night "A" League to shatter the previous record.
The "old" record of 814 was held by Dan Moyer.
Krzemien accomplished the feat as a member of the Hondanuts.com team that also broke the record for the highest three-game set with a pin total of 3,502.
The Springville native's series of 269-290-290 not only made history locally, but was the second highest total for three consecutive games in the history of the Dunkirk Bowling Association, of which the Gowanda league is part. Krzemien and his team set the new records at K&L bowling on lanes 5 and 6. The same two lanes have also recorded several perfect games of 300 over the past few years.
Although bowling alleys have been scattered around the village of Gowanda over the past century, K&L Lanes has seen more than its share of top bowlers. Krzemien's feat on Sept. 10 will now become part of the lane's history that dates back to the 1950s.
The Monday Night "A" League, in which Krzemien and his teammates reached their milestones, has always featured the best bowlers in the area. With approximately 35 more Monday nights this bowling season, there are sure to be more terrific scores recorded.
As for K&L Lanes, they have been in operation since 1959, when Ken and Lew Gabel purchased the establishment from Don Smith. With the individual and team scores that were recorded on the first Monday night of the new season, K&L Lanes will no doubt be talked about throughout the Western New York region in the foreseeable future.
