Bemus Point tops Gernatt in baseball

The Gernatts Babe Ruth Baseball team for players 15 years and under traveled to Bemus Point on Thursday, July 5 and came up on the losing end of a 9-8 score. The loss dropped Gernatt's overall season record to 5 wins against 2 losses.

Gernatts scored in the top of the first inning as Matt Kruszka hit a double and was later knocked in by Shane DeLeo. The home team scored two in their half of the inning and two more in the bottom of the second.

Bemus Point continued to build their lead to 6-1 by the fourth inning.

Kyle Farner, who had started on the mound and pitched well, was victimized by untimely errors. Shane DeLeo came on in relief of Farner in the fourth and pitched the rest of the game, giving up three runs.

Gernatts did manage to fight back and trailed by scores of 6-4 and 7-6. However, Bemus Point scored twice more to push their lead to 9-6 with one inning to play. The green and gold did mount a rally in the last inning, but it was too little, too late and they lost by one run.

Kruszka led the Gernatt offense with three hits. Carter Benton knocked in three runs while Farner, DeLeo, Jack Van Wey, Josh Balzer and Shawn Daniels each collected a hit.

Gernatts returned home for a scheduled game against Frewsburg on July 7. However, the contest was canceled due to lack of players on the Frewsburg squad. Gernatts has remaining games against South Dayton, Southwestern and Silver Creek before the playoffs begin.
