Early goal helps Williamsville East past Kenmore West

A dominating first period helped the Williamsville East Flames to a 3-0 victory, Thursday evening, over the Kenmore West Blue Devils in a Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation matchup at the Northtowns Center at Amherst.

Blue Devils forward Matt Prohaska was penalized for tripping, one minute and 19 seconds after the first puck dropped. Twelve seconds later, Flames defenseman Brenden Chambers fired a slap shot through heavy traffic, beating Blue Devils goaltender Sean Guetti to make it 1-0. Matt Steffan assisted the power-play goal.

The Flames outshot the Blue Devils, 8-1, in the first period.

“I liked the energy,” said Flames head coach Mike Torrillo. “I rolled four lines tonight and I thought all four played well. [Goaltender] Adam [Dentico] didn’t have to make many saves, but he made the saves when he had to and that’s three games in a row that we’ve won.”

The Flames scored again, two minutes and 58 seconds into the second period, when forward Josh Sadkin won a battle in front of the net and eventually stuffed the loose puck between Guetti’s legs. Forwards Matt Steffan and Mike Carballada were credited with the assist.

Carballada picked up another point on the Flames’ third goal, feeding forward John Bielinski, whose wrist shot from the point beat Guetti – who finished with 23 saves – high on his blocker side, halfway through the third period.

Dentico recorded 15 saves.
