Springville’s junior varsity Griffins retain perfect score

SPRINGVILLE — The Springville-Griffith Institute junior varsity football team improved its record to 2 – 0 on Saturday morning, Sept. 8, with a 42 – 20 win against Eden.

The Griffs jumped to a 22 – 0 first half lead and Head Coach Greg Hodges said his players never looked back.

“We had a really good week of practice and this game meant a lot to the sophomores, because they lost to Eden last year, as freshmen,” Hodges said, adding that hard work and preparation were key, going into this game.

Eden scored on its opening drive of the second half to make the score 22 – 6, but the Griffs responded on their next drive with another touchdown, to make the score 28 – 6.

Hodges credited his team’s resiliency to his captains. “We have three great captains on this team that, no matter what the situation is, they step up and pull everyone together,” he said.

Tommy Schweickert returned a fumble for a touchdown for the second straight week. Sophomore fullback Pat O’Brien put the finishing touches on the Griffs’ 42 – 20 victory with a touchdown run in the final quarter.

Hodges said that his fullback has “all the qualities you look for in a ball carrier. Pat is a fast and powerful back that can change the game with one carry of the ball.”

The junior varsity squad will play away against host Burgard on Saturday, Sept. 15 with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
