Springville girls junior varsity basketball follows up on first place season
The junior varsity girls basketball team is coming off a season in which they finished in first place, in that division. Coach Robert Gainey said he is not expecting anything less from this year’s team.
“We are expecting big things, this year. The goals remain high, for the team and for each individual. We want to keep this streak of successful seasons going, as long as possible.”
The team is made up of five sophomores, seven freshmen and one eighth grader. Gainey said he thinks his team will be ready, when the season comes.
“The girls have been scrimmaging and practicing at a very high level. We have a talented back court, led by eighth-grader Julia Krzemien. It also includes freshman Brittney Luther and Sara Kwiatkowski.”
Other guards on the team include Kristen Baker, Meg Hanrahan, Emma Beckrich, Jenn Kessler, Kalee Schreiber and Riley Stedman.
The team’s front court is also very gifted, according to Gainey. “The talent doesn’t end with our guards, as we also return three forwards, from last year’s squad, whom will be relied upon to rebound the ball and play strong, interior defense,” Gainey explained.
“The front court is led by Carly Lamos, Jess Wiede, Jenna Schunke and Sam Reese. These post players bring a tremendous amount of potential to the team and will look to anchor the interior, all season long.”
The Lady Griffs will open this season on Friday, Dec. 7, when the JV team travels to take on Pioneer Central School at 5:30 p.m.
