Springville takes two against Gowanda junior varsity baseball

FOLLOW THROUGH - Gowanda JV pitcher Shane DeLeo follows through after delivering a fastball against Springville at Panther Park on April 12. The jv's return home on April 23 to face Allegany-Limestone
Due to a rainout on April 11, the Springville and Gowanda Junior Varsity Baseball Teams played a doubleheader at Panther Park on Thursday, April 12. The visiting Griffins won both games by a score of 6-4 and 11-4.

The opener was well played by both teams. Shane DeLeo started on the mound for the Blue and White and put forth a solid effort going 6 and 2/3 innings. Jamie Jensen came on in relief for the final out in the top of the seventh inning.

Gowanda fell behind 2-0 in the first inning but fought back to tie the game in the third. The game remained tied until Carter Benton hit a two run single in the bottom of the fifth to put the Panthers out on front by a score of 4-2. However, Springville came right back to knot the score at 4-4 going into the final inning. A couple of Panther errors and some timely hitting gave the visitors the win.

In the nightcap, Gowanda was designated as the visiting team in a scheduled five inning contest. Again, Springville jumped out to an early lead and led 3-0 after one inning. But the baby Panthers exploded with four runs of their own in the top of the second inning thanks to a bases loaded double by Cole Dailey and singles by Matt Shea and Josh Mitchell.

Springville tied the score at 4-4 in the third and crossed the plate seven times in the fourth to complete the sweep. Shea, Jensen and Ben Tessmer pitched for Gowanda in game two. Josh Balzer made the best play of the day with a running one handed catch in right field while Shawn Daniels caught both ends of the double header. Chris Cook also snagged a line drive from his second base position.

The JV's return home on Monday, April 23 with a league game in against Allegany-Limestone. The first pitch is scheduled at 4:30 pm. Gowanda is coached by Sean Gabel and assisted by Rob Fetterick.
