Bikes in Village of Lancaster

Seeing and hearing recent news articles about the kids, businesses, and proposed ban on biking on Central Ave., is so absurd. To the toy store lady: Don't blame your woes on the kids. You chose to open a high end toy store in a struggling economy. I have been in your store, although your product is quaint, you are never busy due to the fact that most of your goods are old fashioned and more geared to collectors than kids today. Are you just angry that the skate shop is busier than your shop? The owner of the skate shop obviously was more aware of the trends of what kids do and what parents will spend money on. Your complaints make you sound like a toy store owner who doesn't like kids. I go through the village two, three times a day. I do see kids there. But tell me, where are they supposed to go. Have the complaining owners of these businesses been part of the problem or are they part of the solution. I attended the fund raiser for the skate park at the Polish Falcons a couple of weeks ago. Many local businesses donated time, money, and goods to make it a great success. Did the complainers donate? Do they have donation canisters in their shops? Great if they did/do. I have worked with teenagers many years, I have also had 4 of my own. Teenagers are not nasty disrespectful brats. They have and always will give respect as it is given to them. It is not a parenting flaw or an indication of bad kids, it is just the way it goes with teenagers, they are forever testing the rules of polite society. Treat them decent and they will move the world for you. It is time for the leaders of the village, the businesses, and the community as a whole get together and make the bike/skate park a reality instead of a lot of hot air. As to banning the biking on Central, it will one the most absurd things this village ever did. I am 52 years old and bike, am I going to get off my bike and walk it through the village? Are the bike police officers going the skip the village on their patrol? We can have beer tents at every village event, but the kids can't ride their bikes there? Priorities?

Well
Well as per the law it is illegal to have a Bicycle on the sidewalk. That is of course unless it is a toddler and they are just learning to rid a tri-cycle or a bicycle and their parents are helping them out. Per the lar, Bicyclists are suppose to be on the road and following the laws of the road. So unless this toy store owner has people riding on the sidewalks in front of her store then there is nothing that can be done. And even then the ONLY thing that can be done is having a police officer sit there 24/7 to watch for that 1 bicyclist that would ride on the sidewalk. But a ban will never happen due to the fact that a Bicycle is a vehicle, and if you take the Bicycle off the road, well you have to follow suit with every vehicle including the 1 that this store owner drives in every day. There is nothing to worry about as the law is clearly on our side as bicyclist's. That is of course unless you are that 1 that is riding on the sidewalk. But then again you are putting to many people at risk to even care about.

Agreed
I concur with the first post. I think this will further alienate the youth of Lancaster. There are other ideas that should be considers like a greater effort to build a skate park, better communication between the businesses and the teens, a plan to attract more "teen-friendly" entities. If safety is the true concern, then stricter helmet laws or police foot patrol should also be considered.

@Agreed
As far as helmet laws go, after 16 years of age, there is no law stating that the rider needs to wear any helmet. It is a choice at that point. It is also an education and enforcement issue by parents after that age. As far as a skate park, I would have to say no. The reason I say this is I have seen these parks fail time and time again. The last 1 was in West Seneca on Harlem rd. all these tax dollars went to it and then 2 years later the ramps, rails and everything else was being demolished. Now there is nothing. The problem comes down to people riding on the sidewalk, and also no enforcement of the law.
