Jenna in Tonawanda would like to save money by eliminating buses and free breakfasts and lunches at schools. To begin with, this would translate into more hungry kids at school, which means more health and behavioral problems in the classroom and ultimately diminished academic performance for all students. That alone would be irresponsible and tragic. But eliminating buses? It's hard to believe this is being considered. We're going to have kindergarten and 1st grade students walking up to a mile to school? Contending with the increased traffic? In freezing conditions? Past registered sex offenders' homes? What if both parents are working (common these days) and can't drive their children to school? You ask why you have to pay taxes for buses if you don't have kids - the same reason people without cars pay taxes for traffic lights and roads - it's part of the social contract. Kids can learn that kind of stuff at school if they're able to get there.
