PARENTS ARE TAKING ON A BIGGER BURDEN FOR HOMEWORK

Homework is just that, work done at home. I had it when I was a kid and it's been continuing for generations. Today we are more involved as parents than our parents were and that is a fantastic evolution. My gripe is I have two children and an emmense amount of homework to accomplish in a small amount of time and that is not quality time with my chidren nor quality study time. I am a single parent who works full-time. We get home at 5PM, after dinner homework starts around 6:30 and is rushed through to end with a bath and bed and more homework reading our books. Is this the life we want for our children? It is impossible to let your children do this work independantly. How do you incorporate extrcurricular activities? I understand the pressure our new curriculum standards put on our children but this "lifestyle" is not working. I know two-parent households that struggle to accomplish homework everynight. How do you keep your children in love with school when they are bombarded with it 10 out of the 12 hours they are awake? How do you keep your sanity as a parent in trying to keep up with the homework?

According to John Rosemond, parenting expert who appears in the Buffalo News once a week, homework is to be done by the CHILD. My mom never and wouldn't help me with my homework. She said, "I went to school. I did my work. Now, it's your job." God bless my mother. I had no one standing over me, sitting by me or even reading over my homework or projects when I finished. It was my baby and I rocked it. Teachers who think parents who work all day want to come home and start working with their children are crazy. I didn't want to do it when my kids were growing up. I had other things to do with the rest of my day, than administering homework to my children. Any homework a child has to do should be able to be done independently or else it is inappropriate. I warn my adult daughters now not to have very many children or else they'll be crucified until they graduate from high school. What a world this has become. Some people want to extend the school day and the school year. I say they are out of their minds. Families and children need to have a life outside of school, too. The amount of days and the hours in the day for school were enough for us. It's enough for today's students, too.
