Lend a helping hand this holiday season

LANCASTER/DEPEW- Everywhere you look there is a little bit of Christmas at Elaine’s Flower Shoppe. Sparkling ornaments, locally grown poinsettias, red and white candy canes hanging from the ceiling, glittery snowmen, and so much more. It is truly a sight to see.
And in the spirit of Christmas, Elaine’s Flower Shoppe will once again be helping those who are less fortunate this season. With her one of a kind Everyone Loves Flowers (ELF) arrangement, Owner of Elaine’s Flower Shoppe Elaine Bialecki, will be donating $5 for each arrangement ordered to the local food pantries.
The money raised will be donated to Trinity Pantry in Lancaster, Tri-Community Food Pantry in Depew and St. Martha’s, formerly Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Depew.
“This is the third year we have done the ELF arrangement for the food pantries and every year it has become more popular,” remarked Bialecki. “I’m hoping to sell more this year than we sold last year. They’re so grateful and there are so many people, and even more people this year, that are using the food pantry.”
The ELF arrangement consists of red carnations, white chrysanthemums, red berries, pine cones, Christmas greens, and on top an elf ornament.
“Every year we want to make it a little bit different,” said Bialecki, in regard to the ELF arrangement. “This year, it is a prefect centerpiece for a table.”
Bialecki came up with ELF after seeing elves all over the place at the Dallas market she attended a couple of years ago. On her way back home, on the airplane it came to her, she wrote down the phrase “Everyone loves flowers” and, taking the first letter of each word, the ELF centerpiece was created.
To add to the elf motif, “the ELF, the elf” has come back again this year with his six-and-half-feet long legs dangling from the ceiling of the shoppe, as well as two new elf helpers beside him.
But it is not all about the elves this Christmas at Elaine’s Flower Shoppe it is also about the polar bears, specifically Kali and Luna. The two polar bear cubs at the Buffalo Zoo who need a new habitat built in order to stay at the zoo.
The zoo launched a campaign called “Our Bears Belong in Buffalo,” raising $18 million for a new entry complex and state-of-the-art habitat for polar bears and other arctic species.
With funds already in place for the habitat, money to maintain the habitat will of course be needed. This is why Bialecki decided to help the polar cubs by creating a Polar Bear arrangement with $5 being donated to the zoo for every arrangement ordered. Each arrangement comes in a hand-painted “Send a Hug Cuddle Bears” vase.
The vase is filled with holiday favorites including red carnations, white cushion chrysanthemums, flat cedar, variegated holly, noble fir, and red berries are accented with sparkling silver ornaments.
“I’m hoping to sell 300 of these,” said Bialecki.
The ELF and Polar Bear arrangements each cost $39.95 (plus tax and delivery). Both programs end the first of the year.
“Everybody loves polar bears and everybody loves elves, so it’s going to be a hard choice,” Bialecki laughed.
In addition, Bialecki will be hosting her annual holiday open house this weekend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the shoppe, located at 2365 George Urban Boulevard, in Depew.
Patrons can check out the shoppe’s Christmas Wonderland, win prizes, and enjoy free refreshments. There will be Christmas decorations and ornaments for sale, plus scarves, candles, gift baskets, and a complete selection of jewelry.
Also, for those who want to check out Bialecki’s extensive collection of Santa Clauses. They are currently on display at The New York Store, in the Village of Lancaster, and Beechwood Nursing Home.
“Everybody loves them,” said Bialecki, referring to the nursing home. “The employees, the residents, and the visitors. It’s kind of heartwarming, because Santa Claus needs to be out, not hiding, throughout the month of December.”
