LANCASTER- Leana Marcezin has been selected to receive the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Tennis Woman of the Year Award of 2013. This award honors 16 individuals nationwide.
Leana has been chosen in recognition for outstanding service and dedication to local tennis within the Eastern Section. She will receive this prestigious award in January 2014 in White Plains, N.Y. Leana has boundless enthusiasm and generosity for the sport she loves – tennis.
Tennis is better in Western New York because of Leana, her husband, Nick, and their business, Twin Village Recycling. They have energetically promoted tennis through sponsorship of tournaments, organization of USTA teams, and benefits for players.
“It’s never too late to start to play tennis and there’s always the possibility to get better,” remarked Leana. “It doesn’t matter how old you are, that’s what I really like about tennis. I can see how I’ve improved and how much better I am as a tennis player. I really, really, like it.”
Leana and Nick sponsor prize money tournaments on multiple occasions throughout the year at Miller Tennis Center. The Marcezins are benefactors for the annual Village Glen and South Towns Tennis Club Championships. The Schaff Memorial Tennis Tournament also takes place each summer in Lancaster with support from the Marcezins. Hundreds of Western New York tennis players take advantage of these tournament opportunities every time they are played. Players at the open level to junior level participate.
In 2013, Leana organized multiple USTA adult, senior, tri-level and mixed doubles league teams. Each year, she organizes and captains more teams than the previous year. She pays for all indoor court time for her teams’ practices.
Devoting her time and talent to these teams, she stated fellowship with her teammates is her primary goal. The Marcezins participate year-round in tennis USTA league play and tournaments.
In spring 2013, Leana put together an event in honor of a local tennis player who traveled to Turkey to represent the United States in the Fred Perry Cup and ITF Senior World Championships.
In addition, she donates funds to local high school teams for uniforms and the Daemen College and University at Buffalo tennis programs have received contributions. Local tennis players who are facing medical expenses or even travel expenses to USTA national events have been helped by her also. And, everyone loves the event and team T-shirts that Leana generously and consistently provides as giveaways.
Buffalo and Buffalo-area tennis are better thanks to Twin Village Recycling and Leana and Nick.
