STELLA NIAGARA, New York (October 4, 2013) – Students, faculty and administrators of Stella Niagara Education Park celebrated Peace Week from September 30 through October 4.
Peace Week at Stella Niagara coincides with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the Sisters of St. Francis. Following in the tradition of St. Francis, the Stella Niagara community is dedicated to caring for the environment and fostering peace in the world. Stella Niagara has been an official Peace Site since 1989. Each year the school population recommits to the cause of peace in the world.
“This year our environmental project is called ‘Bottles FOR Water’,” Kristen deGuehery, Director of Institutional Advancement, explains. “The campus is collecting returnable plastic bottles to raise money for Heifer International. Money raised from Bottles FOR Water will go toward funding a well in a third world nation.” Students will be bringing in bottles throughout the month of October. “In addition, they are learning about the lack of clean water for a large portion of the world’s population,” deGuehery further explains, “It is estimated that 780 million people do not have access to a clean water source.”
The Stella Niagara community gathered Monday morning, September 30, to hold Prayer and Pledge in front of the statue of St. Francis of Assisi. They processed outside to enter the chapel for the opening prayer service. On Thursday, all students ate lunch with their prayer partners and created entries for a time capsule. The partners wrote how they intended to be peacemakers throughout the year.
Finally, on Friday, October 4, the students, faculty and a few of the Sisters met in the Children’s Dining Room for an ice cream treat and to deposit their entries into the time capsule. The capsule will be opened on the last day of school next June.
