FIFTY YEARS AGO
April 12, 1962

The Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches unite Palm Sunday evening in a union service in the Baptist Church at 8 o’clock. The service will be led by representative youth from the three youth fellowships of the several churches.

On March 24, six members of the Field and Stream attended the Erie County Sportsman’s Convention in Lancaster. A Springville boy won a scholarship to the New York Conservation Camp in Rushford at this meeting: Robert Smith of Genesee Road.

On Thursday evening, April 5, the regular meeting of the Felton-Burns V.F.W., the officers were installed by past Post Commander Michael Langreck.

April 13, 1972

Matthew J. Mahl is one of two seniors from Canton College who are participating in a regional nine college automotive troubleshooting contest, to be held in California in June.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
March 25, 1982

Winsmith Division of UMC Industries, who have long supported Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, has designated their 1982 gift for the James F. Murray Memorial Fund.

Thomas Follman, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Follman of Colden, is one of 16 students who will be performing with the Cortland College Ballroom Advance Formation Team at the Colden Fire Hall Saturday, March 27, at 8 p.m.

Cable TV is headed for Springville and US Cable and Tri-County Cable plan to be ready for homes within the next six months.

David Tyer (nee Leanne Wells) of Baytown, Texas, March 5, in San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Joshua Alan.

April 1, 1982

When G.I. meshed the hoop with time running out in their final league game against Holland, they capped the championship of Division VI and thus, like all championship teams at Springville, qualified for a victory banquet.

Jim Ackley was medalist with 2 under par 34 for 9 holes at Deercreek Country Club, Thursday, March 25.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
March 12, 1992

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Doris Horn’s employment with Simon Bros., owner Bob Simon has proclaimed the week of March 16 - 22 as “Doris Horn Week.”

The West Valley Wildcats had one of their most successful seasons in school history end in the Section VI Class D semifinals when Ripley defeated the Wildcats, 63-50. Tim Gebauer broke the school season scoring record for most points in a season with 410.

A reception was given Feb. 15 for James and Laura Clarke of Buchanan Dam, Texas, in honor of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Beginning this fall, St. Aloysius will offer a new transitional kindergarten program in addition to the pre-school and regular kindergarten classes. The program is designed for youngsters who may not be mentally prepared for a full-day kindergarten curriculum.

TEN YEARS AGO
March 21, 2002

The town of Concord has a new deputy town attorney. After executive session at the March 11 town board meeting, Concord Supervisor Mark Steffan reported that the board had agreed to appoint Deb Barone, wife of Town Attorney Mike Barone, as the deputy attorney.

Kevin and Vanessa (Barnes) Mayer of Springville celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary on Feb. 19. The couple was married at Royal Air Force Base in West Ruislip, England.

The village of Springville’s 2002-2003 proposed budget does not include a tax increase and may possibly include a slight decrease, Springville Mayor Gary Eppolito told the village board during Monday’s meeting.

Daniel Sobczak and Lisa Amoia of Arcade, March 9, Kaitlyn Nichole Sobczak.
