FIFTY YEARS AGO
April 26, 1962

The Erie County Police Chiefs Association, representing 21 city, town and village police departments in the county, met last week at the Leland House, at which time a number of resolutions were voted upon and passed.

The educational and cultural aspects of the sesquicentennial are very much present in the arts and photography committee. Its members are headed by Dr. and Mrs. Sheridan C. Waite and Mr. and Mrs. Harold L. Olmsted and have met frequently during the past few weeks. They are making plans for art and photography exhibits, which will be held in the high school on Buffalo Street during the sesquicentennial from June 30 - July 7.

This spring, the spirit of the sesquicentennial has been evident in Paul Randall’s class at the junior high school. The students are busy making 38 large top hat and bonnet silhouette signs, which will decorate Springville’s main thoroughfare.

Highlighting the program for the third annual Rural-Urban Day, sponsored by the Erie County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, will be a tour of two Erie County farms on April 27.

M. Anthony H. Faller, president of the Holy Name Society, District No. 72 and member of St. Aloysius Church, Springville, announced that the annual May Day Rally will be held May 6 on the premises outside the parish hall at St. Philomena’s Church in Franklinville.

The annual school district meeting will be held Tuesday evening, May 1 at the elementary school on North Street at 8 p.m.

April 27, 1972

David J. Ellis, son of Mrs. Lorraine Ellis, was awarded with his silver wings at Moody AFB, Georgia, upon graduation from the U.S. Air Force pilot training.

The promotion of Iris A. Kita to senior trust officer of Marine Midland Bank - Western has been announced. She and her husband, Edward P. Kita, live on State Road in Colden.

Navy Petty Office Rick W. Church, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph W. Church of West Valley, was one of the men involved in the pickup of Apollo 16 and the recovery of that spacecraft. He is a member of the Helicopter Combat Support Squadron 1 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga, the primary recovery ship.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
April 22, 1982

Springville amateur actor Nick Schmitt will appear in the South Buffalo Theater’s dinner theater production of Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor.”

An early morning fire destroyed the Red Lantern on Route 240 in Glenwood this past Monday morning, April 19, killing one man believed to be John Carducci, 24, a resident of an apartment above the tavern.

The Springville Country Club will honor its 1982 president, Norm Abrams, and his wife Gert, at its opening party on April 24.

Norbert and Audrey Kuhn were guests of honor at a surprise champagne reception April 18 in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
March 26, 1992

Springville-Griffith Institute student Mark Hara, 13, will depart for the Commonwealth of Independent States, formerly known as the Soviet Union, next summer. He has been selected to participate in a People to People exchange program in July, designed specifically for seventh and eighth grade students. During the three-week stay, he will study the culture, economy, government and people of a country undergoing historic change.

Darren Chiacchia of Springville and his horse Amethyst are on their way to making the United States Olympic equestrian team.

The village has rescinded the per-bag charge for garbage after a hearing at which village residents expressed opposition to the charge.

TEN YEARS AGO
April 4, 2002

The Springville Village Board heard a presentation given by the TVGA Engineering firm on March 25, regarding Phase 2 of the village traffic study (Main Street from Barnstead to Route 240). The board reviewed the study and discussed all the intersections from Waverly and Main streets to Newman and Main streets.

The Ashford Board is taking aim at mobile homes that may not be in compliance with town codes. Councilman Charlie Davis reported that he had driven around Ashford for an entire morning and came across 22 house trailers that were either abandoned, or did not have skirting in accordance with the town ordinance, or were in some way in violation of the town law.
