SPRINGVILLE — FIFTY YEARS AGO
July 5, 1962

“On the Corner” by Bill Lowe. The big week is here. As of press time, things are going smoothly for the Sesquicentennial Committee. The first performance of the spectacle is over and went well. Monday’s float parade was excellent. A big vote of thanks is in order for Gail Blakely for that. Let’s hope the celebration days continue to run so well. Have fun this week, with the commemoration of the 150th birthday of the town of Concord.

Antoinette Folts closed her active teaching career this spring after almost 35 years teaching kindergarten in Griffith Institute and Central School.

A family reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Jacob Benzing on celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple was married June 29, 1912 in Franklinville.

A. Sandford Kenyon Jr. became president of the Griffith Institute and Central School Faculty Association at the closing luncheon of the year.

Jayncee officers installed recently are: Norma Angelo, president; Marie Benzing, vice president; Jean Fancher, treasurer and Dorothy Enser. Jaycee officers installed included Dick Fancher, state director; Dr. Bill McMahon, state director; John Dygert, secretary-treasurer; Dick Enser, internal vice president; Ray Fisher, president; Huge Sharpe, external vice president and Charles Rodgers, secretary.

Stewart Lowe, June 24; David Michener, June 28.

Girls were born to Mr. and Mrs.:
Richard Woodworth, June 28; Kenneth Yager, June 29; Arthur Welsted, June 29.

FORTY YEARS AGO
July 6, 1972

Twenty children of the Nursery School for Handicapped Children were presented certificates for having successfully completed the 1971 – 72 school year.

Ellen Martin appeared with the Children’s Theatre Company of the Onondaga Community College Drama Department in a presentation at the Laurel Arts Festival in Wellsboro, Pa.

The patients at Springville Nursing Home honored two of their residents who had birthdays in June, at a silver tea birthday party. Maude Denmark, who turned 80 on June 2, and Lelia Emerson, who turned 87, were honored. Both are lifelong Springville residents.

TWENTY YEARS
July 9, 1992

Erie County Executive Dennis Gorski named Albert Bockhahn of Springville as the parks department’s top gun for May. Bockhahn began his employment with the parks department in 1984 and is currently assigned to the bureau of forestry.

Springville-Griffith Institute Superintendent Dr. William and Mary Nennstiel presented a cash award to district art student Amy Eppolito. The Nennstiels will be purchasing one work by a district art student and donating that art work and appropriate frame to S-GI Central School on a yearly basis. Eppolito is the first winner of the award.

Gail Cherry received this year’s Service to Youth Award from Springville Youth Inc. during a presentation July 2 at Fiddlers Green Park. The annual award is presented to an individual who volunteers his or her time to work directly with the youth of the community.

TEN YEARS AGO
July 4, 2002

Doug Bailey has left the stage. After 18 years of filling the Springville-Griffith Institute auditorium with music, the school’s chorus and musical director has retired.

The much-awaited traffic signal at the Boston State Road and West Tillen/Boston-Colden roads intersection has been approved by Erie County.
