FIFTY YEARS AGO
March 29, 1962

The former Methodist Church on the corner of Buffalo and Franklin streets is being dismantled this week. Next year, this church would have seen 100 years of history pass by its doors.

In 1812, 150 years ago today, the town of Concord was created by an action of the state legislature. Concord is also the second oldest town in Erie County, but shares this distinction with its sister towns of Hamburg and Eden.

Mr. and Mrs. Myles J. Rogers, Shirley Rogers and Joann Lang attended the graduation of Richard J. Rogers from the New York State Police Academy, which was held at Hendricks Chapel, Syracuse University, on March 23.

At 8 o’clock Sunday evening, April 1, the church women of the Baptist and Presbyterian churches will join the Methodist Church women in conducting the fourth Union Lenten Service, which will be held in the First Methodist Church on East Main Street.

The Masonic Grand Lodge of the State of New York has awarded Springville Lodge No. 351, F&AM of the First Erie District, a plaque for outstanding ritual work for the year. William Lowe was this year’s master. The plaque will be presented annually to one of the 17 lodges in the first Erie district for high proficiency in degree and other ritual work the lodge presents. The event took place at the Sweet Home Masonic Temple on Feb. 17.

On March 22, Darrell Bartkowski, eighth grade student at the junior high school, became the spelling champion of Griffith Institute and Central School. Bartkowski will now compete in the written semi-finals which will determine the Erie County champion representing in the Western New York Regional Spelling Bee. Seventh grader William Ahrens received a certificate of merit.

FORTY YEARS AGO
March 30, 1972
Airman James Place, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris J. Place of Springville, is a member of the Strategic Air Command Wings at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Michigan, which has won the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

John C. “Jack” Knepflar died on March 25.

Louis and Anna Bugenhagen will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on April 2.

Pastors and soloists from Springville churches will participate in the three hour Ecumenical Service on Good Friday.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
March 4, 1982
Brandon Schlemmer and Joe Drexler of Kissing Bridge, both Springville students, have been named to the New York State Junior Ski Team.

A spell-off between the two finalists in the annual spelling bee competition led to the selections of Middle School winner Wendy Lowry and runner-up Tammy Szudzik.

Seeking re-election for mayor is J. James Neff, who has held this position since May 1, 1980, after serving several terms as trustee and deputy mayor. Alan Manchester and Charles J. Cranston are candidates for trustee.

TWENTY YEARS AGO
Feb. 27. 1992

After nearly 47 years and an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, World War II veteran Lucian Koscelski received medals for service performed above and beyond the call of duty. Koscelski was on the island of Bataan when it was forced to surrender and was part of the five-day, 125-mile “Bataan Death March,” in which thousands perished.

Anthony Thomas, 3 1/2, has been named the Annual Children’s Hospital Telethon Satellite Child from the Boston/Colden area.

A television station originating in Springville is one step closer to reality. The application for a construction permit has been made to the Federal Communications Commission and is now in the hands of the engineering and legal departments for review.

Jason Czapla, a WVCS senior, received recognition last week as being the second player in the school’s history to score 1,000 points in his varsity basketball career.

Feb. 28, 2002
Ryan Feltz and Mike Kumrow became the first two wrestlers in Springville history to advance to the state meet after sectionals last weekend. Both wrestlers placed first in the AAA class meet.

Anthony and Ethel Smith of Boston recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a renewal of their vows at St. John the Baptist Church in Boston. The Smiths were married Jan. 19, 1932 in Buffalo.
